Hey Jordan,

That's a good question that we get asked a lot.

That depends. Usually your carrier will block you from using other carriers in your home country, even if your phone can see them (unless they have a roaming agreement). That doesn't have to with the iPhone being locked, that has to do with your SIM card.
But overseas, while roaming, you can usually use any network that your iPhone finds.

Sincerely,
iPhoneTrip Team

I always like using mapquest when traveling to Europe. Although I haven't found an app for it as of yet, I like using it for all my travels around Europe. Google maps is also another great app to use.

Great list. If I'll be able to go to London, I'd love to try some of the apps you've recommended in here. It will also be great if you create another list like this one specifically for Amsterdam and include "25 things to do in Amsterdam" on that list. Thanks!

Thanks for this round up. Having an iPhone while on trip definitely makes things easier for travelers. The apps that you've recommended in here seem interesting. Will probably give them a try if I'll be able to head to Rome. Anyway, since the topic is about traveling to Italy with iPhone, I would like to suggest "25 things to do in Milan" by Rainbow Riders. Good app to consider if you would like to easily find your way around Milan since it has a map that works offline and it features 25 of the best POIs to visit in the city. Try to check it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id452995437?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4. Safe travels everyone!

Thanks for these tips. I find them to be truly informative. I would also like to add that it would be preferable to download a travel application that is specifically designed for your destination. For instance, if you are going to Milan, it will be wise to download "25 things to do in Milan" or a similar application. Choosing a specific app for your destination will make it easier for you to find your way around your chosen vacation city. Again, thanks for these info. Looking forward to read more!

THE BEST APP ON PARIS METRO THAT I'VE USED SO FAR...........
Paris By Metro app has options to go to the ‘Most visited tourist places’ in Paris by metro & ‘Paris Airport transfer’ section. This app gives choices of the shortest route, the minimum connection, or I could even opt for the minimum walk route. This app even told me which direction of the metro should I take. Plus, this app also has a facility of currency conversion!
And ALL THIS WAS OFFLINE, I did not need data at all!!! All I paid was 99 cents for this app.

Dear Elias,

Thank you for your comment, and for your suggestion.

We completely agree. Having WiFi on the plane opens a whole world of possibilities. Let's hope we'll see more airlines roll out WiFi services in the upcoming years.

These are some great suggestions, and the World Factbook is great, I used that when I went to Thailand. On long flights like that though, my favorite app is probably TV Everywhere. I heard of it originally through my job at DISH and have been using it ever since. On any plane with wifi I’m able to schedule my recordings, and best of all, watch live or recorded TV off my home receiver. Makes the flights go by quicker.
